Moving Interstate and Rego

When you move interstate and have to re-register your car, do you have to pay stamp duty? If so, this could be very costly if you move house..

Re: Moving Interstate and Rego

when you have been interstate by more than 3 months you have to register it in that state... Well thats the case if you move to Vic.. Not sure if other states have different laws.

No you only pay stamp duty when you transfer the ownership (ie. Sell it). Some circumstances you don't even pay stamp duty then. (such as transferring it to your spouse.)

Queensland, you don't pay stamp duty. Need proof of ownership and current rego.

Yep, most if not all states use the 3 month grace period, which once used up, you must then reregister your car in that state, as if the car was currently unlicensed - ie, inspection and neccesary "slips" required for rego.
