Hi... I've been thinking about getting an older V8 as a weekend cruiser.
I wouldn't want to spend more than say...$6k....
The type of V8s I'm considering are.... the old ford xa 351s.... valiant charger... etc...

naturally I'd want one that has a bit of guts and not do 16secs down the Qtr...

Are there any suggestions on other models?

Anyone here who owns these older V8s gimme some tips on how to search for the right one? What must I look out for? Is it a maintenance nightmare?

I'm pretty open to suggestions at this stage.

Check "Unique Cars". I'd say get a nice XW or XY Fairmont, find something where someone has already spent the money and you'll get a decent ride.

if your looking for a luxury cruiser with a 351 and FULL luxury then in my own opinion (this is a car that you either like or you dont like.....i LOVE and want one!!!!) 1978 LTD. it has everything although i dont know about a 16 second pass or less. 4W discs, lsd, leather (silver monarch has red crushed velour) electric windows and seats, air con and is the last of the LTDs that are 5inches longer than the fairlanes. its unique and are pretty hard to find but they arent really that expensive. youd get one in mint condition for that price. these are cars that used to be used as goverment cars due to the luxury!
thats my 2.2 cents and my future dream anyway.

Thanks guys. I might also ad I am not after luxury. What I want is a V8 that sounds and pulls like a V8!... price range around $6k so I can just throw 3rd party on it. Weekend driver so I don't have to worry about fuel consumption too much. So all the electrics I don't need...just adds weight lol.

I'm trying to convince dad, who is a V8 enthusiast at heart, to go halvies with me.

I would go for XW/XY Falcon or ZC/ZD Fairlaine, nice looking cars and before emission controls.

Id get a coupe... but you'd be hard pressed to find one for that price that is in glld enough nick....however, if you get an xa/b/c sedan, it will be in really good neat. Obviously some will be pre-worked too..

I would go the XW firstly it would be worth more in the future and IMO are better looking than the XD. But i guess depending on the condition of both cars

Yer, get the XW replica. Great car, great looks. Im not a particuarly big fan of the XD's, they seem a bit too plastic-ish for me.

And, you can always flog the parts off easier, and probably for alot more. For instance ill give you $50 for the dash facia LOL... Go have a look around, thats always fun.
