love how the some of the GM fans claim a big victory, funny that the displacement difference between the 2 is 1.4 litres :) I say well done to the Mustang.

The Stang whips the GTO in looks because its an all new ultra modern-retro thing that will be hanging around for a while. The GTO is a tarted up VT commodore with two doors missing. (As opposed to the aussie monaro which is a fine lookin purely styled euro-aussie muscular thing)
THAT mustang should be imported here, nt the horible el cheapo 90's stang. Wish Ford could take a punt on importing that. Ah well.
Thats funny, I always thought it was based on the Commodore, I must admit I feel slightly patriotic towards the GTO as it is based primarily on Aussie know how. That being said I would still take the Mustang anyday, it looks about 10 times better, plus it has Steve McQueen in the ad.
Isn't the Commodore loosely based on the Cadillac Catera architecture too?

what the GTO lacked last year it lacks this year: Watch one go by on the street, and the design still won't trigger an arrhythmia like a 400-hp coupe should. If only it looked as stunning as the new Mustang, we might have forgiven the mislaid pedals, the stubborn shifter, and even the roughly $5000 difference in price. Unfortunately for Pontiac, our comparo jury wasn't blind.
There is not one angle that the GTO looks better then the Mustang, even if I wasn't a Ford fan, for example, compare the rear of the two:
The rear of the GTO just looks cheap in comparison, and too much like its Commodore origins. And don't even get me started on those AWFUL hood scoops that IMO don't work at all with that body shell...
But hey, just my opinion, if anyone actually prefers the look of the GTO, good for them. But if they do, I suggest they get their eyes checked before they get behind the wheel of any car - they might just be legally blind!

Actually, both the Commodore and Cadillac Catera are both developments from the German Opels. I was working in Saudi Arabia when the first VT's arrived in 1998 as Chevy Lluminas, and there was one sitting next to a Catera in the local GM dealer. Except for the differents in power trains, trim, grilles and badgework, they were identical. The head salesman, who picked up quickly that we were Aussies, said 'Good car, made in Australia. Better than last Llumina that was made in USA!' He then told us that the Catera was actually assembled in Germany, not the US.
One interesting thing we noted that day was that nowhere on the car, not even on the build plate, did it say 'Made in Australia' (the one exception was on the battery, but that wasn't made by Holden). The salesman said that was because the Saudis wanted to buy American cars, not Australian. Said that the average Saudi considered Australia to be a 3rd world country!!

Wow some seriously fast numbers from the goat though.
But damn it's got 100hp more than the Stang !
How much would $29000 US equate to in $AU? 50k?
Both cars are very good bang for ya buck.
2005 Ford Mustang GT 4.6 V8 = $24,995 USD Base Price ($32,790.94 AUD)
So basically.. Mustang GT money here will get you a Camry or something. Maybe a Focus ST170.. nope wait, those are $36,990. Can't even buy you a Falcon XT.
Pontiac GTO money will get you into a 250kW SV8. Its $4000 short of an XR6 Turbo though.
