My Run In With The AU Speed Limiter

I was doing a bit of driving on my mates property late last night, private road of course, and i decided to see how quick i could get the falcon on a nice smooth straight. I thought I had had it up around 200km/h before but wasnt sure. Well, once i got around 180 the limiter kicked in. The car went from driving very smoothly as 170-175 km/h then as soon as it hit the 180 mark it bogged down. The whole car seemed to lurch and you could feel it revving out. It actually scared the shite outta me because the sudden lurch jerked the steering and made the car very hard to handle until i backed off the speed. I understand the need of speed limiters but with this being my first experience with one it seems that they can be slightly dangerous. Is the "lurch" i experienced normal? It just seemed very unsafe to me (yes i do realise that doing 180 is VERY unsafe in itself, which is why was on my mates property out back of Werribee) and could be a cause of accidents in itself.

Keep speed runs to the track as if you had crashed you would have waited for ages for an ambo to arrive.

Do it at the track and all the facilities are there JUST INCASE.

Yeah definately a good tip mate, for lack of a better word, I shit myself when the limiter kicked in. I spent the next hour or so thinking about how hard it would be to mop me up if i pranged when i was going that fast.

Re: My Run In With The AU Speed Limiter

It really depends on the car, as to how the speed limiter will kick in. My uncle's R33, while it had the speed limiter, just smoothly hit 180km/h, and stayed there. No sudden lurching, stopping etc. Just stayed smooth, but got no faster.

After the speed limiter was removed... the needle would get to 180km/h on the 180km/h speedo.. and go all the way around back to 0

That was probably around 260km/h btw. Oh and FYI, the 260 (we guess anyway) run was not done on a public road.

Nah, the AU limiter has no warning, it just goes WHAM and stops the car dead at 180kph. If you back off a bit and do it again it hits just as hard the second time around.
Fortunatly, the XR6 has a 210kph limiter

They did 252 in the R34. I should have mentioned.. the R33 was far from stock at that point.
