How loose? If you've adjusted the idler pulley all the way and it's still lose, you might have put the belt the wrong side of the idler pulley. The "ribs" on the belt shouldn't touch the idler pulley (at least, thats the way mine is, I've seen a few the other way around).
I wouldn't run it to loose, it might jump off and get tangled with the alternator/fan/waterpump belt. If that belt goes, you can't really drive any more :(
