Its such a long race I normally move around a bit. I normally watch the start & finish from pit strait but during the race move to other spots the most fun is up the top of the hill with all the nutters
When i went there last year (was also my first visit for a supercar race, had previously been for a practice day when the supertourers were running though) I was all over the place, I has the general admission ticket, and basically started up the top of the mountain for the start, then wandered around from the elbow back towards the cutting, then caught the shuttle bus back down and went between hell corner and caltex chase. I didn't buy a pit pass to get access to the pits though.
Having seen the start from Pit Straight you just have to be at the top of the mount this year. The waiting before the race, the parades, do they still have the RAAF Roulettes - you actually can look down on some of their performance from up there. The anticipation hearing the engines roar as the race begins, glimpes (maybe) through the shrubbery as the leaders head up mountain straight. Then a site you well never forget. A full field of V8Supercars inches apart flashing across the top of the mountain, the cheers from the crowd around you - incredible. And then the realisation that they will all be back again in just over a minute.
In the good old days, I first attended (as an adult) in 1981, the top of the mountain was brsitling with every kind of home-made stand (scaffolding was the best). Those that arrived earlier in the week had fenced off (literally) their patch next to the guard railing closest to the track. It was a real circus.
Most of that behaviour got banned when there was an accidental death following the collapse of one of the scaffold/stands. At least the individual went out with a smile on his face. It was during a wet T-shirt compeTITion held on the Saturday. Seems the stand wasn't too stable with about 50 blokes all hanging off one side.
