If you can tow and haul with a F150, I suggest going that route. Smaller V8 gas engine, and depending on the axle ratio, the 5.4 gas engine will give you better mileage than the diesel, not to mention lighter weight, easier to park, less to maintain...etc. If you plan to tow something that's a decent size (over 7,000lbs) in the next year or two the diesel would be the better choice. However it also pays to shop around in whatever weight class you're looking at.
For 10K you can probably get a newer 2004 F150 4.6L with similar mileage, if not better.
