Need some advice

Hi my name is Tyler, I'm 17 years old and I have the oppurtunity to buy a Ford diesel pickup, but I need a second opinion. Its a 1999 F350 Superduty Crew Cab short box with a 7.3 and its got 164,000 miles. The owner wants to sell it for about $10,500. Now my dad says I don't need a diesel and truth be told I don't, and he knows that diesels are expensive to repair. I just want a pickup that will last me a long time because my current pickup isn't going to last much longer. Should I buy the diesel or just look for another gas pickup?

Thanks, Tyler

Re: Need some advice

If you can tow and haul with a F150, I suggest going that route. Smaller V8 gas engine, and depending on the axle ratio, the 5.4 gas engine will give you better mileage than the diesel, not to mention lighter weight, easier to park, less to maintain...etc. If you plan to tow something that's a decent size (over 7,000lbs) in the next year or two the diesel would be the better choice. However it also pays to shop around in whatever weight class you're looking at.

For 10K you can probably get a newer 2004 F150 4.6L with similar mileage, if not better.

Re: Need some advice

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it. I don't think I could've bought it even if I really wanted to. My dad is anti-diesel anyway.
