I see the Pommie Autocar magazine have had there dirty little mitts on the new V10 M5. They are the first mag that I've seen so far to have had the privilege to do so. Unsuprisingly, they give it the thumbs up, apart from the brakes, which they seem to think are not quite on the same high level as the rest of the car's dynamic ability, although they don't rubbish them per se.
They say it rides better than a 530d, is a fantastic drifting machine and the best engine in any production car ever built (although a BA taxi probably has more torque).

I think those figures have been known for a while though.

Still, sounds not bad though.

Unless the taxi you're referring to is an F6 Typhoon then you're slightly off...

BA I6 Petrol = 380 Nm
BA I6 E-gas = 372 Nm

BMW V10 M5 = 520 Nm

Okay so...

In an 1840kg M5 a 350+kw wngine and 520nm of torque can deliver sub 5sec performance.

Which to me means that a supercharged 5.4 with more torque and a decent gearbox SHOULD be able to deliver similar performance??

Goes to show that weight isn't the big handicap we all think it is, provided it has a decent gearbox and engine to move it around!!

Somehow I don't think that $A159k will translate to here directly. But with what the car offers, if it did, it would be a bargain. I agree M5 = mmmmmmmmm!

Come to think of it, regarding the weight, 1830 kgs does sound like a lot of weight, almost too much considering how much they claimed to have worked on reducing weight and using magnesium components etc, but thats what it says. Its a smaller car than the falcon, uses lots of lightweight alloys etc so how come its just as heavy/heavier? All those gadgets must all add a lot to the weight i guess. The power/weight ratio was 277 bhp/tonne according to the mag. How's that compare to the BAGT anyone know?

The M5's have been fantastic cars for a long time now, and this one is no different. I'd have one in a heartbeat! Simply can't argue with the grunt and presence of the thing.

Interesting point that Richo makes, and one that I have been harping on about since the BA GT was released and tested. The previous model M5 was a pretty good match for the GT in terms of weight and power, and it never ceased to amaze me at how much quicker the M5 was!

The new M5's engine is a real work of art, a serious bit of gear whatever way you look at it. 240kg, 373kW @7750rpm, 520Nm @ 6100rpm.
