Toyota have almost admitted there's a serious styling problem with the Camry. All their publicity shots etc are from the front of the car and often only show the car to the B pillar. Camry has got a huge boot but this has meant it also has one of the slabbiest barge arses ever put on a car. There is also a problem side-on with the rear door shut line which runs parallel to absolutely nothing!

Holden was always going to struggle with VT updates. The VT was an attractive design and short of a clean sheet of paper it was going to be hard to improve. The VY is the result. Another dubious styling modification to the VT would have to be the Statesman/Caprice which look like a very strange stretch. The front of the Fairlane may be ugly but the back of the Statesman is even uglier.

Other candidates for ugly awards:

- Anything from Renault in the last 2 years except the Laguna.
- Anything from Korea
- The new Cadillac. (Ugliest headlights since the 929L)
- Citroen C5 (I think Citroen see a certain cachet in being ugly)
- Civic Sedan (This is what happens when USA becomes your No. 1 markey)
- Lexus ES300 (As ugly as a Camry but $30K dearer)
- Maxima (The 1992 model was so much more stylish)
- Avalon (See Civic sedan.)

So, its NOT trying to beat Falcon or Commodore, so i dont get your point?

I think Camry's a great cars (even if they are boring). Its the only one of the "major four" thats never had to be recalled.
Hmm, sorry, if Toyota dont have desires to build the No 1 Large car in Australia, then why are then even trying to sell them??

Car companies are in the business of making money............

I didnt say it was a bad car, i just said it was a tryhard car, I mean, what is up with SPORTIVO? what sort of tryhard sporty name is that, TRD would have been a much better name...........

Neither did I say that Camry was out to beat Ford and Holden.......

So, I dont really get YOUR point either?

Well guy's I'm going to be honest here and say what I think...

Over the past couple of years I have viewed the opinions of other members, media and general public alike and I have to say this...

Generally I have found Australians and New Zealanders to be very conservative in their tastes and therefore if anything considerably different comes along there is a greater tendancy for mixed opinion.

Design aesthetics are subjective to everyone, for example someone may not like the styling of say a Monaro but yet just about everyone else loves the look of it.
And this case all over the world where places like Europe generally prefer the look of more radically different cars such as the new Renault Megane and yet the same car down under would mostly get negative feedback - but thats because it would be in a conservative market.

In regards of myself I prefer designs that look different and un-tried but yet aesthetically appealing.

And thats my opinion.

Can i say this., there is nothing like seeing the New Ford and New Holden driving on our roads, their change over the years is only leading in the right direction for the unique growth of our tastes

The pug 206 cabbrio is pretty gross. From the front.. meh... from the side.... HOLY CRAP PUT THAT DOG DOWN! What the hell is with that roof line, yes it goes to a convertable, but you have to put the roof up you know, and all of sudden you have this thing.. eugh...
Camry i just dont like... true better than the last, but a fridge on wheels for sure. The Mazda 6 is WAY better looking, and is supposedly better too. I like those taillights, for the first time altisa tailights don't look that ricer.

Then the HSV Y-series.... it looks like a bull dog.. except uglier....
The plastic looks cheap, the back.. theres just no saving it... and overall a mess of lines and a look that makes me feel as if it had a car accident with the ugly tree... then the ugly tree fell on top of it! Why HSV!?!?? why did you do it?!!??! We have to see them on the roads now, and yesterday i saw one and i covered my eyes till it was gone!

Johno - you summed things up perfectly
The stylist - very true.. even though i actually like the AU (Which was thought as WWWWWWAAAAAAAY out there, the grill of the au1 futuras and fortes were a bit fugly but the rest was ok...). And Europeans are wierd (for my tastes). You have some of the fugliest things on the market coming from there then you have Audi, merc, jaguar... which makes some of the most beauitifuly styles designs. mmmmm jaguar XK8 :) mmmm Merc SL55... and i love the audi a4!

Ok.. thats my $1.10s plus gst worth!

I tend to agree with J-Type regarding the conservative styling preference in Australia and New Zealand which isn't a bad thing.

Commodore and Falcon have crossed paths somewhere in the design process although I wouldn't call Commodore "new edge".

New Camry just doesn't do anything for me, after so many $$$ spent on new designs and face lifts etc over the years it still can't make a winner...............
VY commy well, SS and Calais and definately Monaro are the pic..............
As for Ford, AU XRSeries 2,3 look fantastic (i may be a little biased) T Series awesome....BA XT boring, Fairmont Ghia looks great XR8 even better GT and GTP mmm woooohoooo

Overall many car designs in this day and age look terribly out of proportion but there are the cases where they just hit the mark!!!

Regards
Me

The T3 AU's looked aggressive no matter what angle and the rear wing squared up the droopy ends and really set it off, I doubt I'll feel that way about the series 1 BA's. If you're looking at it at any angle that doesn't show the front it just looks plain to me.
your comparing the top off the line ford (T3 AU) to the base model BA, im sure you wont say that about the GT or GT-P!!

.
I cant stand the new jap cars rear ends, there is NO STYLE at all!!
