More speed cameras will be installed across the state following an independent study's findings that the devices do slash road deaths and greatly reduce other accidents, not just make money.
Preliminary results from an evaluation of 28 of the state's 110 speed camera sites show deaths in those areas have dropped from 21 over three years, to just one in the two years since the cameras were installed.
That single death was of an 83-year-old pedestrian hit by a car travelling at 30kmh about two kilometres from a camera on The Entrance Road at Bateau Bay.
The study by ARRB Transport Research also found that in speed camera areas, crashes causing casualties fell by 23 per cent and "tow-away" crashes by 17 per cent.
The number of motorists exceeding the speed limit by more than 10kmh dropped 88 per cent, and speeding offences overall fell by 72 per cent.
In one spot, on the M4 at Greystanes, the number of speeding motorists has been cut from 12,000 a day to 1100. On Cowpasture Road at Green Valley the number fell from 2200 to 260.

The Minister for Roads, Carl Scully, said the study's results should have ended once and for all the debate over whether speed cameras were more effective as revenue raisers than safety devices.
"The research shows that cameras work - they save lives and reduce injuries," Mr Scully said.
"My estimate is there's probably 20 people alive today because of these cameras and . . . there could be hundreds that aren't injured and thousands and thousands of dollars of property damage that has been prevented.
"On any value-for-money criteria the taxpayers have done very well out of this.
"It's good road safety policy and it puts to rest this nonsense that they're revenue raisers."
Mr Scully now wants to install more cameras and has asked the Roads and Traffic Authority to identify where they should be put.
Mr Scully said if motorists did not get the message to slow down when they passed three road signs warning of speed cameras, "they do when they get the yellow envelope".
"No one likes being caught speeding, but speeding remains the single biggest killer on the roads. Speeding is involved in more than 40 per cent of all road accidents in NSW."
Of the 28 camera sites evaluated, 14 were in Sydney and 14 in other parts of the state. The evaluation area of each camera considered the site's "blacklength", varying from one to three kilometres. The sites represented a range of speed limits between 60kmh and 110kmh.
The latest NSW Police annual report shows 431,000 speed camera infringement notices were issued in 2002 and $40 million collected in fines.
The ARRB study found public acceptance of speed cameras was now high, with only 5 to 7 per cent of people surveyed saying the cameras provided no benefit.

My question is where do they get the 5-7% figure from?
Hint for the next state election - vote Liberal and send these wallies a message.

1:weve had a drought in NSW for how long???? thats right two years.
ill bet many of those 21 deaths were in wet/damp conditions. to say that speed cameras have saved lives based on the information is a load of
SHIT
2:in wollongong they have built a multi million dollar interchange at the bottom of MT OUSLY and have put cameras in just after. the interchange is now divided the whole way nice and safe(and fast) one fatality(due to fatigue) before the cameras and none after... theres your stats, thats a 100% reduction is it not??
3:the average annual road toll to my knowledge has been steady for years. the fact remains that no matter how many cameras are installed there is ALWAYS going to be people crashing cars, its called human error.<this is a full stop
4: do you honestly believe that if we vote either way that it will make a lick of difference? its about taxing people for enjoying their driving. all pollies want is more money in the coffers. speed cameras arnt called a tax ... thats why they like them so much... taxes down, spending up?

28 of 110 sites? that's only 30% of sites how can a survey be conducted on 30% of evidence?

So where is this study? freedom of information act should allow anyone to get a copy of it, or doesn't it exsist? It's all good and well saying you have evidence, but where is it? You don't get through Uni by saying you have an assignment without having to provide it or show it.
Someone should get a copy of it and send it into ACA or the local paper, ratings plus there.

$40 million dollars worse off more like it. This money isn't even going into things it should be, like more Police to protect us, better roads, better drivers, better health, better schools etc... then we could say we have done very well out of it.
They refuse to acknowledge that more people get killed every year from drug overdoses and cancer, where is the crackdown (excuse the pun) on those? - no revenus that's why.

Why are Australians so different to the rest of the world? England only came up with 5%, and Italy 9% of all road deaths.

Re: NSW Installing more Cameras
YAY!! been looking forward to this for ages NOT!!!!
just makes me sick all i can say is...
this is fuctup!!!!
i went for a drive up to brisbane from the coast on a 4 line super highway on a 110 zone.
i have never seen or heard of any fatalities on the m1 highways since its build date 4 ys ago but in the 75k long stretch of highway i saw 3 speed cameras and 4 cops with speed guns.
but yet thers like 15 known hot spot where accedents happen and yet no coppers
oh and where were the coppers when my mate's house was broken into??? "aw sorry sir we were off geting drivers which we gain money out of, but ur robber .... we have to pay for him to be in prison so we dont bother with them"
cheers.joe.
