The West Australian, Saturday 15th, has an article on Holdens oil troubles, with the Gen III. 67,000 have been sold in Australia, 2% have had problems, (1340engines) Oil consumption is the main problem, Holden state " 2.5litres every 10.000kms is acceptable". The 300kw HSV engine has been the worst offender.
A new piston pin will be available from April, to stop the piston slap problem. Holden also advise to use mineral oil not synthetic oil in their engines.
I like this " Holdens engine woes have had little effect on sales but with a resurgent Ford about to launch its Ford Performance Vehicle division,the last thing Holden want is disenchanted owners. "
I hope the Boss 260 and Boss 290 are faultless.

Hmmm, that could explain why I seen an ad in the Sunday Times of a VY SS for less than $42,000 plus orc.
Doesn't say wether it's new or a demo though.

I think youll find that alot more than 2% have problems. 2% is the generous figure given by Holden who also say Its not a problem with the car its a problem with customer perception!! Ahhh yer right guys!!! Its more like 2% have major problems (Piston Slap and Huge oil consumption) and around 10% have either minor issues with oil consumption or havnt been reported.... yet.

I bet that 2% doesn't include the complete engine change outs that they done.

Anyway, when you look at it, 2% is buggar all. The best figure to go off would be the percentage of all Gen IIIs built. Not just what is sold here.

Now if the 10% quoted by PHoeNiX_EB is correct, then they do have a big problem.

They would be new I reckon, as there are 4 to choose from it says, and I thought that you dont get o.r.c. with demos?

Whichever way you look at it though, that is dirt cheap for an SS
Is the SS not selling well because of the SV8 or XR8?

Dont know the truth to the rumour but i was hearing trade-in prices of commodore models with the GEN3 were being cut by a few thousand $$ because of potential engine problems the dealer may have to fix....but as said unconfirmed...not sure

Given Dealers have to offer a 3 month warranty on a used car in most states they won't want to be on the hook for a vehicle that would be out of the 3 year manufacturers warranty.

If you have a 5.7 that is 2 years 9 months - this might be the time to trade!

I would hate to see the difference in trade in price of a 3yr old 5.7 v 2 and half year old. Not many Dealers would want to be on the hook!
