As the subject states my computer has finally died, ironically while I was on FF iRC (and they said it wouldn't damage anything! ).
So now i'm in the market for a new machine and i'm just wondering if anyone from melbourne has recently bought one at a good price or if people can just list their favourite places to buy parts from, because the odds are i'll build the box myself.
Greg I too got mine from msy. Ill list what i got and roughly what it cost.
Gigabyte 7n400 pro 2 400fsb - Socket A, Firewire, Raid, USB, SATA all the bells and whistles not bad for a g/b board there not my favorite.
Amd Athlon Barton 2800+
Leadtek Winfast 5900xt 3D card these babies rock and are not to expensive $300
Volcano 12 cpu cooler the 2800+ seem to run around 55 - 60 deg to hot for me so this thing dropped cpu temps 15 deg.
Case well lets just say there cheap but get a decent power supply especially if your getting a fairly decent graphics card because the Yum cha ones just dont cut it. And your forever troubleshooting only to find out your power suplly is a POS.
Mate im sure you have done this many of times, but if you need a hand I'm quiet able to help you out with whats good and whats not. MSY is defianatly the place to go for price. There customer service is ok but not the best plus there really hard to understand.
I paid around $750 for all that. I used my current HDD but im thinking of getting two 120 gig SATA drives and running them off the raid controller in striping mode.
The cpu cooler was an additional $50 aswell.
Give me a bell mate im sure you have my number. I can even give you a hand with this if you like. Im also thinking of building another very shortly and using your favorite os on it Linux ( I have something planned :). All i have to do is get some more cash
without starting a war IMO the intel chipsets are better for most applications than AMD, I have a 2.8 ghz in this machine and use my old AMD 2500 as a HTPC, the AMD 2500 was nowhere near as capable as my old 1.6 ghz even though it is rated @1.83ghz
Depends what is really broken on your set up now, like PSU and HDD, drives (CD burner/ DVD) etc might be reusable...
MaD-WoG
Chip = 124
Mobo = 157

I'm currently waiting on a replacement HDD for my new comp -
A v. sweet P4 2.8 HT w/ radeon 9600 Pro 256 TV out dvd/cd-rw combo drive, 512 corsair ram... pretty much the same as Ambrose_1's computer - I built it for about $1100 NZ... what you blokes need is something like www.pricespy.co.nz -that was where I sourced all my parts
Just my 2c, cause that's all thats left in my wallet after I blew it all on that ^^

When my last one died i had enough of these generic computers,so i decided to by a good name brand one with an 18" LCD screen and although very expensive i couldn't be happier with the results.
Cheers John

look at www.ausprices.com or www.razorprices.com for all your pricing needs
These two sites are a database of computer components and their prices. But beware, of postage costs if interstate and if you buy every component from different shops, although it may seem cheaper you are paying postage costs many times over.
So what I do is search through for the components and pick the shop which is consistently cheap.

It might surprise you to know that your name brand system will most
likely have the same components inside as these generic systems.
