Edit: Barium is also derived from the greek word 'barys', meaning heavy. I"ve heard about the Barra being a bit heavy lately, perhaps it was named accordingly.

The atomic weight of Baruim is 137.33 (average of all known isotopes) which is actually lighter than Gold (196.97) so I guess there's no real relationship between the elements and the cars.
One mole of barium would weigh 137 grams which means that a BA XT would weigh the equivalent of 12364.96 mols or 7.4437x10^27 atoms of Baruim. :s5
