I bought a set of 9mm eagle leads for my AU6 and booked the car in for a service at PW Warwick Farm to have them changed, along with the fuel and air filter. I also mentioned that the car would ping even on medium throttle. He told me that the pinging was due to the quality of the fuel I was using. The so called service took nearly 8 hours and, upon picking the car up they had charged me $71 to change the leads and reset the base idle."We checked it over, everything is ok.What about the fuel and air filter I said, You did not ask us to do that, and me "effen Bulls**t".
Now correct me if I am wrong but does'nt the 6 have a knock sensor? and If it was fuel quality wouldnt every standard AU ping?
I will admit that it does not ping on PULP but why should I use a high octane fuel without the high octane performance you get from an XR 6.

I run my XR6 HP on Synergy 8000 all the time and doesn't seem to ping. But yes your right with the knock sensor it should retard the timing so it doesn't ping. have you tried changing fuel stations from teh one you normally fill up.

Yeah XR Strider Ive filled up everywhere on std unleaded and its still the same. Dont get me wrong though I avoid the "ethanol servo's as much as possible and at least try to use one of the big three. Its a case of running a high octane fuel in a car that should not require it. You can be sure that if Ford designed a standard AU to run on PULP, sales would have been even lower than what they were.I think I will borrow a workshop manual from the library and do a diagnostic on it. Even if the problems have only been intermittent it should come up as a code.
XR6MAN, Pinging is the collision of two flame fronts in the combustion chamber, it sounds like a tinny rattle. This occurs when the mixture is ignited by something other than your sparkplug,a split second before the plug fires. This results in 2 different parts of the mixture in the chamber burning. When they meet they smash into each other causing a huge pressure spike, which can blow head gaskets, crack rings, pistons or even the block(mostly in race engines)if left to continue.

I've been chasing a pinging problem in my EF XR6 for the last two years!.... PULP make a difference, but I should not have to run on PULP. The engine was designed for ULP. I do notice that when using Mobil ULP, it seems worse, whereas BP and Caltex seem the best.
