Yep, the title says it all, the Liberal Party in Victoria wants to phase out petrol powered cars by 2020. Though I agree with the problem of greenhouse emissions and air quality, I think it's a bit far fetched.
Read the article, rather interesting, I remember seeing the Hydrogen BMW at the Motorshow in March and how the insides worked, I guess in the end it's a matter of cost and delivering the fuel, converting cars etc.
What ever happened to the control by OPEC and the Petrol Giants fat chance petrol ever being stopped altogether, way to many vested interests for that to happen. Just like that room temperature fission thing a while back and that amazing water powered car back in the 70's.
Nice try more like 2050 before anything changes!
Most of the cars on the roads in SA are over 20 years old.
I agree that something should be done but why not LPG and Natural gas than step over to Electric or something else when they've got it right we have 2 brilliently clean fuel sources at our fingertips right not and these systems can be fitted to any petrol powered car with out unreasonable cost.
Why not make a major push for LPG and Natural over the next 5 years how about being able to claim a gas converstion on your TAX??? Everyone would change then and you'd be rid of half the problem!
Nice romantic idea put forward by the Liberals.. Only one problem, who's going to pay for the infrastructure for the new fueling stations for hydrogen & other alternate fuels? Who's doing all the research into these alternate fuels? You guessed it.. The oil industry. Petrol will be here for a long time to come folks.
Excuse the cynicism but ....(message to political advisers) ...
Wake up and get your bloody hands off it!!
Scary thought really - this is the same party that presided over the pitiful attempt to "modernise" the public transport system ticketing system and in doing so set the cause back 20 years.
There is massive infrastructure in existence for the delivery of present fuels and unless the "next" fuel can be delivered using similar technologies then we are in for a lot longer than 18 years to effect the changes.
Havbing said that there is little doubt that we do need to start thinking about utilising new fuel technologies before we have no fossil fuels left.

hey russ our great grandkids, grandkids will be living on the other side of the milky way before we run out of fossil fuels. i think our main concern is the redistribution of carbons from a solid state to a gas in the atmosphere. while we keep reproducing at the rate we are we'll run out of food before fuel....and clean air.
nak302 you are right I think. The more stuff that dies and rots turns to fossil fuels and it is a constant process. The only reason why OPEC says there running low on oil is to jack up the bloody price must be in cahoots with the greenies. Yes we'll be orbiting Phobos 9 before I see that fossil fuels run out. Hey wait a minute they will be mining it on the moon or Ganemede or something. Making fossil fuels produce produce lesser by-products is the bigger challenge.
Cockle Creek in Newcastle is a good example of fossil fuels gone wrong. Pasminco burn the sulfur in the coal there so the cities don't choke. Just about everyone there has a lung ailment and 50% of kids have asthma there as well. Maybe they should be concerntrating on alternatives to coal power. There are plenty of options folks. As for petrol powered cars/jets/ships I just don't see a end to them, if at all......
