Well part one of the XR8 vs WRX family battle has finally been concluded.
As some of you may know I have a little bet going with my brother in law about the virtues of his 2001 WRX vs my XR8. We decided that the the only manly :s5 way of settling this bet would to do a head to head on the racetrack and the drag strip. Months of sledging between us, with each certain that the others car would get a caining, all leading up to this past weekend and 7 full on laps on Queensland raceway.
Part 1: The Track
A quick car spec.
His Rex mods: suspension, APS 210kw kit, which is basically a Unichip, intercooler, water spray thingy, different air filter, some plumbing and a 3" mandrel bent system, etc.
My XR8: just some minor mods. :s6:
Anyways off to the track we headed on a stinker of a day. At the track you don't actually race each other, you race the clock with 6 cars on the track spaced out. You get a sighting lap and 7 laps of racing.
I actually left my 18's wheels on the car (normally I use my standard 17" wheels with the Dunlop S9000 tyres) as I was (a) obviously not thinking correctly :crazy2: and (b) wanted to see if it handled any better. They didn't. Whilst they may be ok for street use and good in the wet, on the track they amounted to slippery crap. Although they did slide predictably so could get some great 4 wheel drifts going out of turn 2. :s5
Even with the crappy tyres I mananged a best time of 1:04.81 around the track.
His best was a 1:06.84. :s3
Needless to say the excuses were flying thick n fast. I just left him with the old but true comment, that there's no substitute for cubic inches.
To be fair it was his first time driving a AWD car at the track (he had driven a worked I6 EF last time), so he needed to adjust his driving style a bit, which he didn't.
XR8: 1
WRX: 0
Part 2 "The Strip" coming soon. :s2:
