Snooping laws pass lower house
DECEMBER 09, 2004
POLICE will be able to access stored voice mail, email and mobile phone text messages under new laws passed by federal parliament today.
The laws recognise voice mail, email and SMS messages should fall outside telecommunication interception laws originally designed to stop law enforcement agencies from intercepting phone calls.

Exactly. To me, it's not about me having anything to hide, it's about a lack of respect for our privacy. If I choose to have a somewhat 'steamy' SMS session with LuvinmyEB, I don't really want some cop reading it - it's meant to be private, between her and I, why should anybody else have to read it?
I think there needs to be more checks and balances on this, for example, perhaps only messages or calls from a particular number (say, a known felon or someone who has lodged a complaint, for example), the way it is, it's too easy for this to be abused.
In case you havn't guessed, I don't have much faith in the authorities, if you don't know why then you obviously havn't read about the breakins and damage to my car at our place and the response we've got from the police.

Not trying to be funny but it only takes so many of these laws to be introduced before we turn this country into a dictatorship. What next? The AS will be roaming the streets!!!
If the Liberal Government continue to abuse their powers using the majority in the upper and lower house, I will never vote for them again!!
Glad to know the police need a warrant however to do so. I guess it's ok....just.
