Seeing as I'm sure we couldn't name places we've taken our cars to and they've done a job we were less then impressed with because I'm sure that could be a legal minefield in a public forum such as this one, I had another idea.
How about posting the details of places you've dealt with that you were happy with their work, sort of a recommendation list.
That way, ideally, we'd all have a list we could consult when we need some work done, or need a particular part, or whatever.
I would post some details myself, but all the places I've ever dealt with have been pretty half-assed in their workmanship...

D&M Automotive in Narre Warren, Steve is an honest trustwothy mechanic and good nature. If theres something i cant do myself I trust him to do the right thing and always tells me exactly what needs to be done with no bullshit.
TSA in dandenong (vic) a bit more of the same as above.
Ive used Goodyear in Sotuh Melbourne and have always found them to give straight down the line info and Midas as well, both companies have always taken the time to explain the ins and outs of products available

Ive found Beaurepairs in Balcatta to be a good place for tyres/alignments. Was happy with the way they handled my car when i took it in for an alignment. They gave it a free check and noticed my idler arm was worn and suggested i fix that first otherwise the alignments a bit of a waste. just went across the road to repco there and got a nolathane one ($30 cheaper than repco and other brand rubber ones). Fitted it and went back to Beau the next weekend. They took their time, put planks on the floor so my car would make it on their machine..etc rather than just going fast up there and possibly ripping the bumper off. THen when i went to pay i was a bit short in cash (had eftpos though but wanted to use the cash) and he just said thats close enough and got a bit cheaper.
looong story but yeah they are good blokes there.
