Thought I'd try a comparison between PULP (Shell Optimax and Mobil 8000) and ULP (Mobil 2000 and Safeway). Did several full tank runs and recorded all the relevant figures (mileage, consumption, cost).
The running was 40% freeway and 60% city/suburb work outside of peak hour traffic (I work shift). I keep to my speed limits yet don't drive like an old mole.
I took average economy figures from each fuel. I didn't include a country road trip for 2 tanks of ULP.
My car is an AU1 XR6 HP, run between 144,000 and 150,000K's in the last 3 months. Car is in good condition and properly maintained. I felt only a slight performance gain with PULP.
PULP: Average 13.14L/100km. Best 12.40, Worst 13.83.
ULP: Average 13.40L/100km. Best 12.96, Worst 13.95. Road trip figures for 2 tanks of ULP were 11.39 and 10.82
The conclusion? PULP is a waste of money for me!! Especially at an average 9c per litre dearer than ULP.
I'd be interested to know if anyone who runs cars that can use either fuel is better off with PULP.
Cheers..........

From what i've done PULP doesnt give a justifiable(price wise) difference in power or economy.
I run it through every now and then to clean the injectors. Or if i have extra money, as it is better quality fuel (so i've been told:/)
My 2c
Cheers

Some people think it's great others don't notice any differance.
I think the main advantage of PULP is the fact that it cleans the injectors and if you advance your timing you get a good power boost.

well unless u have a decent comp ratio it is a wast of good money and as far as cleaning injectors its the biggest crock. u want clean injectors rip em out ans put em in the ultra sonic bath only way to do it put a stock au falcon on a dyno runing ulp and then running pulp 99% chance it would be exatly the same as running ulp. tho those that spend the extra $$$ recon that can feeel the diffrance.. bit like tools running avaiation fuel.. sorry guys its the same shit as u get from the pump only filterd alot more.. you want octain go lpg
Thats it, I've been running and recording PULP economy for the last 4 - 5 months, getting an average of 12.4L / 100km. I'm gonna try a few tanks of ULP over the next couple of months, and see if I can notice any difference in performance, as well as see the consumption results. Stay tuned....
Okay......could someone explain to me why the diference in PULP versus ULP in the manufacturers handbook. Been tossing up wether to use PULP in the XR6 ( AU 1 VCT ), but from reading other threads then reading the handbook, it only recommends PULP for the XR8, not the 6. If this is the case, will using PULP void any warraty issues? Also, can anyone with hand-on-heart say that there is any better performance or mileage using PULP !

Absolutely!!! I made the switch to PULP a few years back in the 'ol XR8, and in several of my regular trips between Tweed Heads and Sydney, ULP would require around 1/4 tank more for the same mileage.
Then there's the incessant pinging on ULP... but I won't begin on that! Hell - even Optimax has gone to the dogs recently, and will cause pinging at >5000rpm...
She's now tuned for, and running sweetly on Synergy 8000.

Clicky clicky here for previous ride! I still miss her!
On a recent tank of fuel I got an amazing 800ks out of the tank (68l, AUIIXR6HP) which gives me only 8.5l/100km if i calculated correctly...this was on Optimax. Ive been keeping records of my milage for about 9-10 months now and this is the best ive had. The car has now got 24000ks on the clock. ULP is out of the question as far as im concerned.
