Hey I have $8000 and I would like some advice on what to do......

I have an EA, it needs a new bonet, new paint job, new engine, and new gear box....

so do I get an EB SII motor and gear box, paint it and get new bonet, or...

get a EL/EF XR??

ED-EF XR.. absolutely no question. If you can find one in good nick for $8k then I'd pick one up in a heart beat..

Get rid of the EA mate and try for an ED or higher.

If the cost of getting the EA up to a livable standard is similar to the cost of purchasing an XR, your question has answered itself.

Yeah thats right it will cost more to get an EA to those specs but IMO it will look better. EA's are very spank when they are XR'd... But still with the EF, it'll be cheaper and go harder.

or you could go an ED XR6 - that way you get the EA kinda looks (if thats what you want) but you get all the performance and most of the comforts of a EF/L XR6...i think you would be lucky to find a EF/L XR6 for $8000 though, in brissie you pay about that for a EB/D XR...
