Hi, I am going to be in USA for a while and will be buying some radar detecters that will be the latest and greatest, cost will be @ AU$ 350 each, i can get cheaper maybe if i do a bulk buy. Let me know if u want one and also what type do u like? i leave friday so get back to me fast.

They do work in Australia, trust me. But as said above don't get caught in coustoms with them $500 per detector in Vic but Brissy might carry a diffrent fine. Mine has saved my ass many times from get sprung for doing 3-5 km over.

What about police adoption of lidars? I take it radar is still very wide-spread?

The other problem is police are able to detect radar detectors. I believe the fine is substantial if caught.
In Australia police no longer use X band, so if you buy some detectors, dodge, make sure X band can be turned off otherwise you'll get plenty of false alarms from all sorts of things (eg automatic doors in the city etc.).
