Are red-light cameras equipped with speed cameras?
Just wondering whether those red-light cameras also take the speed of the vehicle as they cross through a red-light. I would also be interested to know how they actually know when you go through one...
Cheers

There are some cameras popping up now which will get you for both speed and red light infringments.
The way that it works is by being connected to the traffic light control box and when the light is red a pressure sensor in the road is activated and when crossed causes the camera to take the photo.
At least that's how I think they work.

Yeah thats spot on. The pressure plates, which are placed before the stop line to detect when there are cars waiting for a green light but once the light is red and a car goes past that plate then the cheque is in the mail, so to speak.
Are you guys sure that there are radars fitted in the red light cameras in other states? I would have thought that the angle of the radar attached to a post wouldn't comply with national guidelines for speed detecting radars.
The red light cameras, in Qld, are activated by magnetic induction loops inserted in the road surface. Activated by a metalic object passing across the loop.

Whats to say that it does meet the requirements...this is Victoria after all.
Since when should it be ok to have a tolerance of 3km/h when the ADR's state that a speedo only has to be within 10%?
"Victoria. The place to be.....booked"

theres a red light/speed camera on Alexandera parade in Melbourne, I've known about it for a while, but still managed to forget about last night untill it flashed me when i passed through the green light doing and insane, unsafe, crazy speed of 70kmh on a 4 lane road....
Re: Are red-light cameras equipped with speed cameras?
The SA Government announced a few weeks ago that the red light cameras in Adelaide will now get you for speeding through the intersection, so you will be hit twice, so beware

In Canberra we have had the combination Red Light/Radar cameras for about 2 years. I think we where the first state/territory to have them. What a great revenue raiser.
Funny thing is that one interestion that had one of these cameras installed must have not returned the revenue expected of it and was removed. It was then relocated to an interestion that has probably 2-3 times as much revenue raising traffic though it. Opps did I stay revenue raising traffic I meant to stay law abeying motorists.
