I just spoke to vicroads about me and my dad swapping cars. Basic story is that he also has an AU but the update with electric front windows and he also has cruise control on his. He want to sell it and im trying to convince him to swap cars with me and sell mine. I will just swap my exhaust, suspension, stereo and a few other little things over. In order to do this though it will cost us in excess of $500 each! We have to pay transfer fee's of $28.10 each as well as $8 for every $200 of the market value of the vehicles. I think that this is ridiculous when the vehicles are only being transferred from one member of the immediate family to another! How does it work when a 16/17yo kids parents have the car registered in their name and then swap it to the kids name when he turns 18, is it the same? How can the government justify this crap. Why should i have to pay money to them (a kickback?) just so me and my dad can swap cars?
There is a special queue for this type of payment a Vic Roads BlueAU. It's the one where you get to the guy at the counter and bend over!!!
I agree in your situation it seems ridiculous.
Its a shocking state of affairs. You also need a R/W iirc (another $60).
We just left my car in my dads name after I turned 18, it was much easier. Unfortunatly we did not know anyone 16yo+ can register a car under their own name.
instead of using the market value for the transfer you can put any price down really. even say 5K each would still make it cheaper for you and they cant do anything about it. write a receipt out for your dad to the sum of 5K and he does the same for you and it has to be accepted.

Unfortunately guys she stated that it has to be from market value, not sale price of vehicle. Apparently people used to use this loophole a fair bit so VicRoads made sure that they wouldnt miss out on that extra cash.
Wada bludy scam!!! I called about getting my car registered and they quoted $550 for an EA Falcon, and thats with a benefits card!!!!
BlueAU, i would suggest this: put down the car value as 1000 or something and if the clerk doing the paperwork questions it tell em its an ex-taxi with accident-damage that youve repaired.
