Ford resale value improving??

Just got my local motoring association mag from NRMA (No Real Mechanic Available!), and I was having a flick through it, and found something interesting - the resale value Falcon vs Commodore has changed since the BA came on to the market, in that they now seem to place a greater value on the current base model Falcon sedan than they do the Executive Commodore sedan. It used to be the other way around... I do know the prices seem a little on the high side, but they are compiled by franchised vehicle dealers for vehicles in sound body and mechanical condition, and have travelled 15-20000 kms per year. Have a look at the following:

1996: Falcon $7700, Commodore $10200 - Commodore $2500 higher
1997: Falcon $9800, Commodore $11200 - Commodore $1400 higher
1998: Falcon $12300, Commodore $13900 - Commodore $1600 higher
1999: Falcon $14400, Commodore $14800 - Commodore $400 higher
2000: Falcon $15900, Commodore $16200 - Commodore $300 higher
2001: Falcon $17900, Commodore $18200 - Commodore $300 higher
2002: Falcon $26300, Commodore $22400 - Falcon $3900 higher
2003: Falcon $27700, Commodore $24100 - Falcon $3600 higher

Seems the BA is doing better on the resale market!

Good to hear. Although I hear that BA Fairmont's seem to lose a lot of value. Anyone gor a figure on that one?

and I thought the EL did quite well against the vs and vt, the resale values seem a bit higher than I expected

why is the 2002 models jump so significantly

does that add up ?

Falcon Sales in 2003 where 73220 and 54629 in 2002
Commodore Sales where 86553 in 2003 and 88478 in 2002

2001 - based on AU3 Forte
2002 - based on BA XT

That's my guess as to why the figures jumped so much, being the BA (current model) and there seems to be a demand for them, especially with the publicity surrounding family car of the year 2 yrs in a row.

The BA explains the Falcon side (no need to say any more), why the VY (that was 02 wasn't it?) would affect the Commodore so much is harder to explain. I think the AU results (98-02) are quite impressive considering how much of a bagging it received, it shows that more pragmatic used car buyers look further than skin deep when assessing their cars.

One strange thing is the 1998 figures, in that it appears the VT Commodore is only introduced in 98 ($2700 jump over 97 value) when it was introduced in 97 - or was it closer to the end of the year than I remember and therefore disregarded? The EL sold (poorly) against the VT for the best part of a year didn't it? Also I can't see why there would be such a gain in 99 AU prices when the major upgrade took place in 2000.

I don't think that thought process is limited to the BAs though...one motoring guide recently did a little review on how cheap the AUs are and the value for money they represent and they mentioned the Fairmonts were an absolute steal.

I thought that the BA was more expensive new than the VY explaining the higher resale

I thought the BA XT came with A/C but the Commodore Executive it was optional; once optioned the prices were fairly close.
