I had to check it wasn't an early April Fools Day Story. In todays Courier Mail, "Rustling Leaves and excessive engine revving could be used by traffic officers to prove drivers have been exceeding the speed limit, a police policy document has revealed.
Apart from the movement of objects by the roadside,such as rubbish,leaves or road signs, police can consider excessive engine revving and "the sound of wind" being generated by the suspect vehicle to determine if a driver is speeding.
The document reads "Experience gained by an officer often results in the officer developing an ability to estimate speed of a moving vehicle with greater accuracy than the average person."
What next will they think up to rip motorists off? No wonder the police have lost respect.

Actually that's been around for a while, atleast in Victoria. A friend was pulling out of a house which is in between 2 speed humps, so he wasn't going that fast (the car is lowered, loud exhaust, typical commodore, ahwell :) ). However, the police car that happened to be cruising along the same road pulled him over.

There were 2 in the car, and one of them seemed to indicate the other was a bastard, anyway, the bastard cop said he was doing 75 in a 50 zone, which he could tell by the sound of his engine. My friend took them to court, because the FASTEST he could have gone between the 2 speed humps (from standing still) would have been 60 or 65, and then his suspension would have been shot as he hit a speed hump at excessive speeds.

Court reduced the fine to 10km/hr over the limit.... meaning they believed the cop was wrong in his estimation, but still believed my friend to be speeding (and therefore that he hit the speed hump at high speed.... wtf?).

So yeah, it's all BS, but the BS has existed for a while.
