I'm thinking of buying a AU XR6, is there that much of a differance between the VCT and normal XR6. Ive driven them both but 1 was auto ( VCT) so its hard to compare the 2. Is the series 1 really the dog the media made out?
I had a series 1 XR6 HP and had no problems at all. Fitted it up with Herrod Exhaust and went quite well. Personally I like the shape of the AU and the XR6 is no exception. Go for it in my opinion.

Ive never seen the so called ugly shape of the AU. Its a hell of a lot better than being seen driving the afterberth of the automotive world. Comondore
I have an AU1 XR6 VCT which is an automatic.. and yes, I wanted the auto because Melb traffic sucks. I dont think its ugly, it certainly isnt a dog, and the IRS makes going fast on twisty bits a whole new experiance. It may not be quites as fast in a straight line as an XR6 HP but come the first set of corners and its all over for the HP :s6:
At the moment the AU1 XR6's are a bargin price. I'd get one again anyday
Yep, I've got an XR6 VCT auto, and it's great. It has the adaptive shift, which you can program for adapative, economy or performance modes. The IRS is definitely worth it - it handles way better than the live rear end of the HP.
A $1250 Unichip will give it almost as much power as a series 2 XR8 and more than a BA XR6 (non-turbo).
For around $20k, they are a bargain buy.
As for ugly - you tell me. Is this ugly? I think not.

Although to the unsuspecting observer, the HP's have a different exhaust tip. The VCT shares the same angled tip as the Fairlane. The HP tip is smaller and cut square.
Also the stance of the two vehicles is slightly different. The HP tends to sit with a higher rear end (it doesn't have that extra 100 kg IRS lugged over the rear wheels.)
If you look on the driver's side power window console, on the VCT, rear power windows are standard.
Cornering in a VCT may be more fun, but cornering in a HP is more exciting.

Easy way to tell a VCT from a HP is look underneath. VCT has IRS and twin mufflers, HP has live axle and single muffler. Easy to spot.
As for badging, no difference at all.
"Cornering in a VCT may be more fun, but cornering in a HP is more exciting." hehe, yeah, and more scary too :s6:
i have an au3 XR6 and love it. auto cos of the wife, but a great car to drive. as for the performance difference between the VCT and the HP, negligible in a straight line. and to be honest, neither is a slow car, so fun will always be had.
as for ugly....crap. i have grown to love the look of the au xr cars.
