I'm getting tired of not knowing what I'm going to pay for my fuel until I get to the pump. I only use 98 RON Synergy 8000, Optimax, or on rare occasions BP Ultimate.
The problem is that the prices for these fuels aren't advertised and there is no longer any relationship between the price of PULP products and ULP. Years ago Shell had a policy that Ultra and Ultra-Hi were always going to be 4 (or was it 6?) cents a litre apart which meant you knew what the price was before you pulled into their driveway.
At the moment I see price differences ranging from 8 to 14 cents per litre (cpl).
I chased Shell on this a couple of years ago however they said that there wasn't sufficient volume or competition for PULP to justify any moves. I argue that with many more cars now coming from the factory with a PULP requirement this argument cannot be substantiated anymore. In fact, I firmly believe that manufacturers who trade in new vehicles that require PULP should be taking up this fight (including Ford).
So, after having spoken to Mobil and Shell who politely excused themselves from taking any initiative I thought we'd start a thread asking the ACCC to initiate ways to increase competition amongst PULP retailers.
I propose the following Options:
Option 1
--------
Fix the price gap between 92RON, 95/96RON, and 98RON products so that purchasers know what pricing exists via roadside price boards.
(example; say 92RON is advertised at 85 cpl, 95/96RON could be +5cpl making it 90cpl, and 98RON could be +8cpl making it 93cpl.
Option 2
--------
Make retailers advertise pricing for PULP products compulsory wherever they choose to advertise 92RON pricing. Therefore, if a retailer chooses to advertise 92RON on their roadside boards, the equivalent 95/96RON or 98RON product must also be advertised.
Now, post a reply to this thread if you agree that the ACCC should act on the proposals above.
Please post user name and provide an email address.
Go to it!

I agree with the above, but can I add that it should also be compulsory to indicate on the pump what the RON is. At many outlets you don't know if it's 95 or 98 and if I ask the station attendants they usually don't have any idea.
