As some of you are aware I am an ex Victorian copper... back in August 1998 I was working in Cheltenham (which covers Moorabbin East) on a morning shift. That night, shortly after midnight Bandali DEBS and Jason ROBERTS murdered Sgt Gary SILK and Senior Constable Rodney MILLER. Sgt SILK was shot before he could get his gun out and died, S/C MILLER managed to get a coule of shots off .. which was a great help to the investigation as it broke the rear window of the Hyundai that DEBS and ROBERTS were driving.
Today DEBS and ROBERTS were found guilty ... why do I bring this up ? I had the pleasure of working with Garry SILK for 3 weeks in 1997. 'Silky' came across as gruff and a typical 'no nonsense' Sergeant.. but really he was a great guy and gave plenty of help to a trainee Constable with no attitude.. which was and is, a rarity.
I did not attend their funerals.. and the guilt is with me to this day .. When people mention the brotherhood of police, it is mentioned in a negative aspect.. no one ever goes as far to think what the 'brotherhood' really means.
In their plans it seemed that DEBS and ROBERTS wanted to kill another police officer in the Western Suburbs .. I was working in the western suburbs after I finished at Cheltenham. It was lucky that the pair never carried out their plans. The police were far more safety conscious than before but if someone gets a drop on you .. unless fate smiles you are history. They may shoot at the uniform.. but there are humans inside those uniforms who bleed and leave families behind.

Next time the news carried a story about police corruption .. or how a Police Officer made a bad judgement call and landed themselves neck deep in It, remember that they are only human, they do make errors but given the nature of the job the errors lead to serious consequences.

It is unfortunate that many people only see the negative side of police officers (being pulled over / getting hassles over car and or driving) but there is much more to being a police officer than just traffic infringments.

There is the side that XA Coupe has mentioned, dealing with the scum of the earth and trying not to let that get to you.

And yes, take the uniform off and there is actually a real person inside, and yes they to have families.

Yes I hope these guys get all they deserve in jail. Its nice to see the family can now get some closure from this mess.

call me old fashioned, but smetimes i think that jail is too good for some people. maybe they ought to pay the ultimate price. IMHO, jail should be punishment FIRST, rehabilitation SECOND. mudrer should be punished completely. not knowing the facts of the case, i iwll leave that one there, but if these clowns are guilty of murder, then they should fry.

too true. sure we all get pissed off at copping a traffic fine, but who are the first people you call when there is someone in your house? where do you go if you get your car nicked? i have met a few really great cops. sure, some are pricks. and the nature of the job is such that you will find a few as coppers, but show me a job where there arent pricks. hell, i work for a bank and am privvy to the reasoning behind some of the unpopular decisions, so i know plenty of pricks. but even pricks have families. kids that arent going to see dad tonight or ever again. wives that now have to survive on the paltry compensation that is paid to widows, and mothers and fathers who have lost a son or daughter.

i had occasion to deal with a copper earlier this year regarding a fatal accident i saw. it was this guys job to investigate what happened. this guy really cared about the victim and why the accident occured.

xa-coupe. i sincerely hope you can feel some sort of closure on this affair. i am glad it is nearly over.

Well said about the part that they are the first people we call when someones in our house too, because its very true.

Bring back the death penalty for these SICK (meant in a negative way) people.
