okay, well the Mini option is sadly not a goer. I had the pleasure of driving the Cooper S last night and thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Great fun. Anyway, as a result, I am now looking for something to replace the Fiesta. Nothing wrong with the car, it just lacks a few luxuries that I want. So, I am chasing some ideas. Here are the guidelines;

car needs to be a bit different
I have to be able to drive it every day in peak hour traffic
it will be left in the sun all day long
it is in a public car park
it has to be air cond
it cant be so different that it will attract attention from the wrong sort
absolute top $$$ spend is 10 grand, but would prefer less

So far, I have thought of a mid 1980's BMW 3 series (not 318), a mid 80's BMW 5 series, EB/ED V8 Fairmont Ghia....and thats about it. I considered an XC GXL Fairmont with very low kms, but wouldnt feel right about leaving it all day.

So, any ideas, or feedback on the BMW's from that era would be greatly appreciated.

oooh...nearly forgot one. A Series 3 Jag XJ6. I know Russ has poured his heart out on here previously about his brief affair with the cat, but I dont know if it was S3 or earlier.

I reckon the 5 series idea is a goer ! I've had a look round at a few of these, and given the quality of the car, and the goodies inside, they are soo cheap ! Still a very nice shape, and lots of the euro cars will soldier on forever . . .
My only turn off is the sometimes very dated interior (switchgear etc).

The other option is the mid 80's S class mercs, I dunno about you, but I love the loooong low look of them, a tint and some nice rims and your pimpin ! (just what you want on the way to work) There are bucket loads of these around the 10k mark for a 300/380se . . .

Just a glance and I've already found a 1989 525i for $10,700!! Some great bargains to be had from this place - including quite a few 15+ year old Euro beauties. Highly recommended!

Oh - and another model I'd seriously check out going on your criteria is the Toyota Celsior (aka. Lexus LS400). Smart luxobarge sedan with the gorgeous 4L V8.

A TX3 Turbo 4WD would be a nice upgrade from the Fiesta & you don't have to rice it if you don't want to you know.

thanks guys. well, rice is out of the question. not necessarily a japanese car, just poor taste. a 4wd is also out of the question. just because i hate them. the early fords are a consideration, the TX5 is out and i cant make my mind up about the TX3. Mr Jucy will be pleased to hear that if i find the right XD, it will also be considered. peugot 205 gti and 405 mi6 are now also being considered. am off to look at a 1989 535i tomorrow.

i love getting a new car

U know, u can get a manual v6 TX5 1994 model for about 8900 now.

the peugots and bimmer will cost a heap in repairs.

Thanks dave_au. I have a mate who used to have a TX5 turbo and that thing was extremely expensive to fix. he paid $200 for a rubber boot for the steering rack! i can get a recon rack for the RS for that money. i am consdiering the early 1990's V8 fairlanes too. i like the idea of fords because they are relatively easy to fix and get bits for. but i cant shkae the BMW idea. mrs rsgerry soon got rid of the jag idea :-(
