Did anyone else see on the news for Today Tonight on Monday night that they have a segment on legal speed camera detectors???

Is this going to be a BS event? Or is there some legit way of getting away with speeding??? I would be first in line to buy one!!!

If its on TV, won't the government stamp it out, cause really, this is going to save people a lot of money in the future.

Does anyone know anymore about this device, and why its legal?

I didnt see the program - but 2 observations -

a. I have heard of one that runs off a gps system - whereby when you get close to a fixed camera, providing you have gps reception, a light or sound will go off etc - it works, but for fixed only.

b. In the US there are a few radar detectors that can pick up the Laser IR sensor of speed cameras - this would work for mobile cameras only. However at least in the eastern AUS states, these devices are banned.

In NSW, fixed speed cameras use a sensor pad in the road that calculates a rough estimate to your speed - if it thinks your high it will fire a laser to confirm.

Also, Im not sure if its still valid, so dont try and sue me if Im wrong, but civil libertarians in this state (NSW) have forced the cops to take rear shots only of cars - ie u cant be done by a speed camera if its facing you. Cops were trying to lobby this thru to change, as I said I dont know if its still current. For fixed NSW still needs to give the three warnings - except with the tunnels where its just three warnings before a 15km long tunnel ....

- victoria to my knowledge has all of theirs completely hidden.

-Queensland can take from the front - Ive seen it. Speaking of which a big hello to the noosa cops with that khaki landcruiser hiding in the bushland.....

ACT is a pain - some smartass down in canberra decided to combine red light cameras with speed cameras. Hence - go thru a red u get pinged, race before the red you get pinged.

Also the lenses of speed cameras are worth about $30k, hence sometimes the govt switches the lenses around. Ive often wondered with the NSW fixed cameras what the green led light and the red led light mean on the face of the camera - I bet its something to do with this ....

OK - so as of yet its shaping up to be some sort of suss device, because to my knowledge any detector is usually illegal and the GPS would only work should the cams be permanent (not in qld...yet) or have broadcast some sort of signal/position.

I would assume that the govenrment would be very quick to modify existing laws to outlaw any new device that had found a loophole in existing legislation, after all, can't do anything that would decrease revenue.

Well in NSW the RTA tells u where their fixed cameras are anyway - its on their website, so at least in NSW I cant see how they could argue in law that a gps receiver could be a radar detector.

But its a pretty pointless exercise in this state anyway - you get three warning signs - albeit sometimes Kms apart - before you come across one.

There's a stretch of road near Manly nrth of Sydney where there are three cameras in 1km of a steep downhill wind.

Its ridiculous.

I live in Qld where we only have about five or more portable cams and they are broadcast from the radio as to their locations.

Yeah, that one at manly is spit road. Listen to this piece of doggy defication - its not a blackspot, its a blacklength !!!! Mosman council who services the road suggested to the RTA to have the speed camera at the top of the hill, where the accidents actually happened, itstead of at the bottom where the camera resides. RTA agreed to put one at the top - problem is they left the other 2 active. From memory one camera shoots down the slope, two up, which needless to say is blantent revenue raising - I would have thought the danger is speeding down the road, not driving up it !!!!!


Yeah, I feel sorry for u vics, It almost scares me into not driving down ur way - so u prolly have found a good way to keep us northherners out. Get your state's civil libertarians to have a whinge - it worked for us.

The clasic I have heard about is Hawaii, where the govenor introducted mobile speed cameras owned and operated by contractors. The residents went balisitc - egged the camera cars, took to the camera cars with bats etc, the govenors support plummeted etc. U know what happened ? he withdrew them altogether.

If only we as a society could do this, instead of copping it sweet with all these revenue raisers. If the opposition made it a policy to drop the cameras, Id vote for them, probably with the majority of the state. Just look at the f**king ridiculous data at the RTA site - people were 10 kmh over the speed limit so that justified a camera ? FFS - Id understand a camera in a place with 20 or more over the limit, but 10 ? U utter Knobs.
