hey all, i bought myself a '70 vw superbug yesterday with asperaitions of doing it up and making some cash. but alas fate had other ideas. i was driving this little weapon (had a worked 1800,bodykit,mags etc) home when i heard a huge bang come from the back of the car and smoke started to piss out. shit i thought the bloody motors blown up already, but being only about 2 k's from home i thought "f*** it i'll try and make it there (i'm about 20 k's out of bendigo).

but after about 10 seconds i could'nt breath for smoke and thought shit i better pull up. i jumped out and watched in horror as flames were licking out of around the fiberglass bonnet (boot?) .within a couple of minutes the whole car was on fire and all i could do was watch as i waited for the fire brigade,who arrived about 15 minutes later.


the result? 1 f***ed completly burnt out super bug on the side of the hwy. the cost? $500 for the car $500 + 3 points for driving an unregisted car, the moral? don't buy a bloody vw!!

...and hopefully you learned a valuable lesson. If you're looking to make some dollars on doing up a car, pull it to the side of the road and set it on fire, because it'll save you a packet.

YEAH a hard lesson to learn but think of it like this lucky it was only a 500 buck car not a 10g+ car.

Reminds me of a friend of my mums bought a brand spanking new EL Gli falcon back in the 90s, uninsured and rolled the thing the first week she had it. Wrote it off, had to pay back $30K for a car she didn't have.

If you ever get the urge to restore a VW again. Fire me a PM as my uncle has a brand new VW engine completely unused and still sitting on the crate, under plastic, the same state it was delivered in direct from the factory (at the time) in Germany.

For someone interested in a restoration project, could be a nice buy.

I've seen over the years a few vee dubs catch fire. It apparently starts with a vicious 'back fire' in the motor which then leads onto something else very quickly going up in smoke. I heard that it takes about two minutes and there's nearly nothing left of the car because they catch alight that quick.

Fifteen minutes seems along time for the firies to turn up?
