Stupid Hackers

One of the forums that I frequent was hacked last night. The I.P address was traced but it was someone overseas. They stole all of the paypal donations made to the website, banned moderators, and just generally created a bunch of chaos. There was some money in there too for updating the bulletin board software eventually.

The poor administrator was up for 36 hours trying to put humpty dumpty back together again.

Re: Stupid Hackers

Sorry but that is amusing.

1. If they were running VB then someones password was either too simple or they shared it with someone else. vB pwds are not easy to crack, not saying impossible, but with the way they do is not simple. PWDs should be difficult and never used for more than one server root pwd different than vb admin pwd different than PP pwd.

2. Backups. They are useful for something. You may lose a day of posts, but it will be returned to a working state and not making an admin have to guess who managed what forum.

3. The admin should have only had ONE person with root access to his server and 1 person with access to the VB backend itself with a difficult password. See #1

4. It is a learning experience.
