roll Supercar scare article in todays Courier mail

Usual beat up stuff. Put a guy who usually cycles to work in a SV300, and he said he though the power was excessive. Wow. Also suggested that these highly powerful cars could be dangerous because, even if they don't speed, when the rapidly accelerate to the speed limit pedestrians and other motorists might misjudge distances and get nailed. Also lined up two tables to show how much power performance cars (SV300, T3, Porshe turbo) have against normal cars (Comode, corolla etc). They got Tickford and HSV heavies to comment, said the usual (sensible) stuff like pointing out handling and brakes. RACQ also did some good for once pointing out that any modern car has enough power to kill you, inferring that the nut behind the wheel is the one you want to watch out for.

Now am I just being stupid or is it not reasonable to think that, given HSVs have had 300kw engines out for a couple of years now, that if they were more dangerous it would be reflected in the road traffic statisitcs. Shame the reporter was too lazy to dig there stats up, but hey, don't let it get in the way of a good story, right?

exactly. as if any reporter gives a flying f*$# about the real issues at stake. all they want to do is sell more papers.

the way i see it, cars are going to get more and more powerfull as the technology gets better and it gets easyer/cheeper to make the power. it's dangerous when un-regulated and un tested and in the hands of idiots.

cars like porsches and even gts300 have a lot of r&d spent on brakes, susp., etc making them, IMHO, a lot safer than any 15 grand korean piece of crap.

Hey,

Given that the high performance cars have much better braking - wouldnt that mean that the high performance cars were actually safer than the regular cars. They would stop in a far shorter distance than a regular car, and every metre is vital in an emergency stop (just to paraphrase the media).

As Ho Ho Ho said, if these cars were really dangerous compared to the regular models - there would be a lot more accidents on the road.

But heres one that will make you think.

I was talking to a copper last night at work, and he was telling me about a young bloke they caught doing 150+km/hr through the main street of Boolaroo (near Spears Point in Newcastle) at about 1 o'clock. He'd just had his Ps for a coupla months, took his parents stock standard I6 EB Falcon for a spin and decided to race. Boolaroo main street is a 60 kay zone, its not the greatest of roads - strange bends and potholes. Apparently there was a car load of 17-19 year olds on board....

Obviously the "Speed Kills" message hasnt got through yet, or the current licensing program aint working.

L8a,
Prud

Cars generally don't kill people. People kill people. You should only drive a car up to the cars & your own ability. Anything past that you are asking for trouble.
How many people have died in badly maintained (Read: Unsafe!) cars?

My old KE Laser is just as capable of killing someone just as quick as my XR6.

This arguement about quick powerful cars is crap considering the North Shore Chadonay set in their 4WDs and bullbars do just as much damage.

As been mentioned before, it's the person behind the wheel or the idiot that crosses the road anywhere because they are too lazy to walk the 100 yards to the pedestrian crossing, not the car.

I can guarantee you I would feel alot safer in a T3, GTS, Porsche etc than some bux box Corolla.

Exactly mate, couldn't agree more. Generally speaking with the price tag i don't think you'll get that many idiots driving around in GTS-300's and TSeries Falcons that fully sick Hyundai Excels.
