Question Toyota Cressida - Why it went??

Ok I know not a Ford topic but I am really curious to know why Toyota stopped production of the Cressida in 1992. I tried a few googles searches and even emailed Toyota but nothing. Does anyone here have an idea why? I was told that it was due to the fact the car was too reliable and they were not making money out of it through spare parts. I am not inclined to believe that though as the person who told me even though is a good mate of mine has a strong bias towards Toyota.

I think it cost too much or Yen was more than poor Aussie dollar and the V6 Camre was popular & made here. The Cessida had the goods though especially the 3 ltr 24 valve rwd, irs etc ...

My father had the last 2 models of the Cressida (I got my licence in one of them) nad was told by the dealer the importing was being stopped after the last model he had. He is very good friends with the Toyota dealer and asked why. The reasons given were:

1. The Camry was moving up market and they (Toyota) did not want 2 cars on the showroom to confuse the buyer
2. They would be too close in spec to a newly marketed car that Aust would be receiving (and a lot cheaper - can anyone say LEXUS!)

Dad now drives a BMW :) So much for Toyota model placement.

Cheers,

toyota cressida - why it went??

They stopped calling it a cressida in 1992...They then made a jzx91 chaser with the 1jzgte engine...(x means cressida series) mx53/mx63/mx73/mx83 etc...all had the m series engines. I am pretty sure they stil make the chaser..but not 100% sure on it...Most of the 1jzgte supra/ cressida conversions here are done with 1/2 cuts from toyota jzx91 chasers.

toyota cressida - why it went??

Nah man the soarer and chaser are totally different, just share the same engine...half the cars in japan we dont get here in aus...we just get engines from them for people wanting to go a little faster.

Toyota also killed the 4 runner for the same reason; felt that it should market towards the family mover Prado rather than let the more manley 4 Runner/Hilux Surf steal its sales

Cressida was being made in Japan only a few years ago as that is what most of the taxis in Tokyo are. I was told by a dealer friend that Cressida clashed with Camry in to many areas and they would've had trouble changing specs to make it different.
