confused Toyota Lexcen and Commodore

I never really understood Toyotas motives in buying out the commodore design for the VN/VP and VR designs. What was the whole History behind it, why did Toyota deem it necessary to do such a thing?

Now to the car itself. How diffierent was the Lexcen to the Commodore besides the obvious badging? I've heard different things from poeple, and although I will never want any of them, I was just interested to know about their differences.

The Lexcen was part of a 'marriage' between Holden and Toyota in the late '80s - the name of it escapes me. In exchange for a rebadged Commodore, Holden got itself the Toyota-derived Nova (Corolla) and Apollo (Camry). Why? Because Toyota needed a full-size entry that was suitable for Australia.

The Lexcen is almost identical to the Commodore - there was no V8 versions, equipment levels and some minor styling differences existed, and obviously there were no utes, LWB versions, etc.

The reason for the commo badged as a toyota was a 'model swapping' deal between toyota aus and holden. Holden got the apollo/camry and corolla/astra and toyota got the commo/lexcen.

Most car makers do this to some extent. Nissan badged XF utes, Holden astra/Nissan Pulsar, Ford laser/Mazda 323, Ford telstar/mazda 626, all of holdens 4x4 and commercial lineup is Isuzu (bar the commo ute) and their small cars all come from Opel now.

These deals are designed to reduce the per unit cost of the cars by increasing the length of the production run, as well as adding another car to the company's model line without all the R+D and tooling costs.

As far as i know the commos/lexcens (in both directions) came out of their respective factories minus just a few cosmetic bits like bumpers, badges, horn pads etc etc, and were then shipped to the other company for the final assembly.

Did the rebadged Toyota/Holden deal have to do with local taxes? Something about how they had to have a certain percentage of cars made locally or they'd get slugged by the government?

main similarity between Commo's and Toyotadores - THEY ARE BOTH DUDS!

my mum's work car was a Lexcen - did about 20 000k's before spitting out a water pump, then the rocker cover shit itself and required replacing (first time i'd heard of this in any car), then all the dash electrics went, then the auto gearbox and finally the head gasket and a quick trip to a wrecker. all within 3 years. Can i hear ya say LEMON???
