The TAC charge is part of the rego fee which includes the injury/liability insurance they provide as a govt agency.

Who knows what is classed as a high or low risk area.

I THINK this is similar to public liabilty insurance for everyone who drives a car - it was mentioned in a previous thread that the TAC is basically an insurance company. Everyone who registers a car has to pay this fee, and this is what they use for paying compensation to victims of accidents.

IMHO they should do the same with 3rd party insurance. Noone should be able to drive without it.

The Transport Accident Commission is a Victorian government body set up to provide insurance for personal injuries arising from motor vehicle accidents. Like all other insurers, they are a bunch of pricks and do all they can to reduce payouts.

The compulsory TAC premium is the major part of your registration fees. The Vicroads registration fee is only $140.

The cover provided depends upon the extent of the injury received, but it covers medical and like expenses after the excess limit and loss of wages after the first five days, plus lump sum payments for more serious injuries if certain criteria are met, which are essentially that you'd rather not be crook enough to justify any money the pricks are prepared to admit you deserve.

The risk rating stuff is here

http://www.tac.vic.gov.au/TAC/000002...E?OpenDocument

and there's more stuff from the TAC on that site.

If you ever have to make a claim on the TAC see a personal injury lawyer ASAP as the TAC won't do you any favours and doesn't necessarily tell you all your rights and entitlements.

So I take you victorians dont have green slips?? (compulsary 3rd party) ??

Just be happy you dont pay the same rego costs as in NSW....

My car...

Registration Fee $46
Motor vehicle tax $261
Fund levy $43
Green slip $498
Pink slip $25

= $873 per year for rego

3rd party is a term that causes a lot of confusion.

Your green slip cost makes it look like it is the same as our TAC charge, being compulsory 3rd party personal injury insurance.

There is also 3rd party property damage insurance which is not compulsory, in Vic anyway (although as Broady Boy said, it should be), which is either basic cover or 3rd party fire and theft. The basic cover protects you from claims against you caused by your negligence in driving, but unlike comprehensive you get nothing for your car(except a lot of insurers have an extension on the policy to cover you for maybe $3,000 to $5,000 to your car if the accident wasn't your fault and the other driver was uninsured and you give them the other driver's name and address and then jump through flaming hoops with a triple backwards pike to satisfy their bullshit requirements imposed to try to avoid the claim). 3rd party fire and theft adds cover if your car is burnt or stolen.

A fair few people are under the misapprehension that the TAC charge provides some sort of property damage cover. It doesn't.

I was involved in a campaign about ten years ago to get 3rd party property made compulsory in Vic and we went close, but the bloody insurers and bureaucrats got their knickers in a twist for reasons I won't go into, but essentially because they are ignorant and stupid and backwards-looking bastards who can't understand clear arguments, and they tried to stymie it. But the politicians were generally on side, except the government changed and Kennett and his crew weren't interested in little stuff like that, so it died.

You're bloody right there - don't know if anyone saw my thread last week entitled "Insurance Company Bastardry" but I'm proud to say that we have finally got the money - over 9 weeks after our car was written off. Took them 3 days to assess the car and 8 and a half weeks to write the cheque :fmad:
