Question UHF radios?

Hi all,

Just wanting to get some feedback on handheld UHF radios. I want to get one to use on cruises, so I'm looking at a fairly cheap and simple unit, under the $100 mark.

Can you get anything of reasonably decent quality for this price? Any comments/recommendations would be great.

Re: UHF radios?

You can get a *pair* of uniden handhelds for $80 from dick smith (uniden UH-036).

I'd suggest spending a bit extra and getting at least 1w of transmit power but don't get carried away and spend $400+ like I did and get a 5w transmitter!

Re: UHF radios?

I spent $50 on my no name brand (read: digitalk) and it works fine for me in a convoy of cars. I got mine at supercheap auto but you can get them at Tandy's or Dickless Smiths.

Re: UHF radios?

I've actually got my eye on a Digitalk on ebay, so glad to hear they're not too bad. The one I'm looking at is 1.5w (while some others I've seen are only .5w) so it should be reasonably powerful. As I said, its just for cruises so as long as it has up to 2-3km range with good clarity then I'll be happy.

Re: UHF radios?

yeah you shouldnt have a problem with that range aslong as your batteries are good at the time.

Re: UHF radios?

I was gonna get the cheap uniden ones (2 for $80) but I got the 2 for $90 Dick Smith brand ones. I know that the DSE brand isnt as good as uniden, but it comes with rechargable batteries and a charger. Handsfree kits are also included. They work quite reasonable.
