Yep good advice the UH-041 twin pack with charger for under $200 (well under if you shop around) are 1W jobbies and perform much better than the 0.5W Uniden baby sets, in both range and battery life. The package includes NIMH rechargables for both radios.
The other feature is the selective calling which allows you to only hear your friends, colleagus workmates etc and not the rest of the rejects that frequent CB. It wont give you a free channel but it will stop you having to listen to the retards.
As for the repeaters remember 1W or less and a tiny antenna is a puny signal with a range of 4km or less so you'd have to be close to the repeaters to hope to get a signal out, and every retard and truck driver will swamp you with carriers at will.
Despite this the Uniden UH-041 is excellent value and really the first step above the toys.
