Vardy a "Bloody idiot"
Richmond youngster Royce Vardy has been charged by police with drink-driving after failing a blood alcohol breath test last Saturday night, which could jeopardise his club's TAC sponsorship.
Vardy, 21, registered 0.14 when tested by police, and will now lose his licence for 14 months when he pleads guilty to the offence.
"One of the obligations people at Richmond have is to honour the commitment of the major sponsor - we've been with them for over ten years," Richmond chief executive Mark Brayshaw said.
"It's devastating to hear that one of our players has done something so irresponsible. On the one hand, he's jeopardised his own life and those of other people on the road."
"Everyone who acquires a driver's licence has a responsibility to ensure that they do not drink and drive. On the other hand, Richmond has a wonderful and long-standing relationship with the TAC and we strongly push the "Drink, Drive, Bloody Idiot" message."
"How we deal with both these issues is yet to be determined, but this is certainly something we're treating with the utmost seriousness."
After the club only heard the news of Vardy’s offence this morning, Brayshaw says both Richmond and the Transport Accident Commission are considering what action they will take.
"We have a very strict internal discipline code and process in place, so you can be sure that this is not something we'll be sweeping under the carpet," Brayshaw said.
Brayshaw, club president Clinton Casey, coach Danny Frawley and captain Wayne Campbell all met today, before ringing Vardy to tell him he can expect serious disciplinary action.
