*VERY INTERESTING!* British accident causes(&im sure its the same here!)
I found this article in the paper a while back :
CRASH COURSE IN CAUSES
Figure from Britians transport department show that breaking the speed limit is not the main cause of crashes. The prime causes of road mishaps are carelessness, inattention and misjudgement. Data from 13 police forces put the blame on:
25.8% inattention
22.6% Failure to judge other persons path of speed
19.7% Looked but did not see
18.4% Careless/thoughtless/reckless behaviour
16.3% Failed to look
13.7% Lack of judgemnt of own path
12.5% Excessive speed.
Excessive means both "above the speed limit" and "inappropriate to the conditions". 70% of excessive speed accidents occured entirely within the speed limit, the data showed. In many serious crashes where excessive speed is noted, the causes of both the excessive speed and the crash is frequently drink, drugs or joyriding in stolen cars.
Interesting hey!!! How similar would it be here i wonder? id say very similar!! However we would add an extra cause, something like 30% to people not wearing seatbelts. Obviously the figures add up to more than 100%, so crashes have multiple causes.
Here they tell us here that speeding is the major cause of accidents! Its NOT TRUE!!!!
ITS NOT TRUE I TELL YOU!!!!!!
Dont believe what they say, more and more people are however. I am getting flashed, told off etc just for passing cars these days just doing 10 more than they are on the freeways!

Considering we take a lot of our statistics/base our rulings from that part of the world, I wonder if it'd be used to base a case for less speed cameras.
Definately not.

Not until they find a way to make people pay for being not being attentive.

Another thing is, because people are constantly on the look out for
speedcamera's or have their eyes on the speedo whilst driving, they
are bound to miss something happening right in front of them.
What I'm saying is that paranoia from being caught speeding
is also a potential factor for accidents.

At one particular intersection the the princes hwy in melb, I see it all too often.
People coming up to the intersection, slowing to 15kmh below the limit, checking there speedo and almost running up someones arse....I see it every other day of the week.
I even find myself slowing excessively initially before I check what speed I am doing. Actions like this completely **** up the flow of traffic along that stretch of road.
