Went BA and VY shopping today.....
Well - decided it was time to have a look at the offending articles in the flesh.
Went down to Ford place in Essendon - they had a red XR6, White Fairmont and a couple blue XT's there.
Had a sit in the XR as that is what I'd be buying (albeit a turbo or XR8)
Outside looks good - they are good looking cars, XT looks to high but all base models do.
Inside is streets ahead of previous offerings - console looks pretty good and works well, although the Fairmont console looks a litlle nicer with the climate control (analouge clock - no, but good place for the boost gauge - order the bit of trim when you stick 2 bar in your XR6T). Cruise controls on the wheels - why the hell Holden don't do that I don't know. Cup holders are very cool with the hideaway cover - auto shitfer was nice and beefy.
Then it was off to the Holden joint - they only had two execs in the showroom but the sales girly took me out the back for some hot lovin, sorry - for a look at the ones they had hidden out the back (official release isn't til sat or something).
I don't think the back looks magnaish - all seams to work ok.
SS looks farkin horn, very aggressive in the flesh, very reminescent of the VX clubbie, no wonder HSV have their knickers in a twist.
The kit all seems to work well, the one I saw was silver with bermuda leather trim.
Inside - the Commodore console is a huge improvement too, all seems to fit together nicely, the colour coding is very good. Alloy pedals are a neat trick(but then I have HSV alloy pedals on my SS). Seats seemed a little more comfy in the SS over the XR6, but only sat in them briefly. Cup holders not as deep as Falcon but deeper than current ones. SS gauges are very trick.
Overall - the Holden is much more aggressive in appearance, but the XR looks good too (XR8 will be closer with bulge).
Couple things, heaps better colour choice in Ford, sales guy got out the colour chart and said basically any colour except those two (dark blue and maroon/burgundy). Premium brake option in the XR is a plus. ( having upgraded the SS from 296mm stock fronts to 330mm HSV ones I can say it should be standard.)
So they each have their merits at this stage, am looking forward to having a pedal in them (especially when the XR8 arrives).
