Actually thats not true...
Caltex / Ampol all come from one refinery
Shell / BP come from the one refinery
Mobile comes from a different refinery.
There is also independant fuel suppliers (I wont name names) who actually supply fuel from the cheapest source. Most of the time this cheaper fuel, is also mixed with stuff that has been drained out of old tanks, or its diluted with other chemicals.
There is also the 50/50 rule... which states, that you must have a minimum of 50% of the advertised fuel in the tank (if the pump says "Optimax" the tank it draws from must have 50% optimax in it)..
This makes the independant fuel suppliers more appealing to servo operators. As the price fuel is at the time you order it, is not the price you pay. Many times I ordered petrol, and by the time the tanker arrived (a couple of hours later) the price was up a few cents. You may think... "wow... a couple of cents"... but when you are talking about 40,000L that can be over a grand more than you expected.
