at the moment i have an XF that needs about $3,000 worth of work
to get it back to something im not scared to drive.
but I have $16,000 to get a new car *glee
ive been looking around and the EL xr6 and AUII's loook nice
soooooo the question is im looking at getting a new car i have 16K to blow
but i want something sporty like a xr6 what do you recomend i get.
It depends on what you want to do (IMHO). If you're looking to really mod it and get the best from it, i would actually go a late model EL (should be able to pick one up for about $8-10k with reasonable kms), and use the rest of the $$$ to mod it.
If you're looking at just basic mods (i.e. lowering, exhaust, sound system and not much more), then you may very well find that an AU2 Forte or something is the go, in which case you could get one for around $14k at an auction.
I was in exactly the same situation mate, I am going for an AUII. I thought I'd be better off spending the money on a later model car than a 3 year older XR6, besides, I still have years ahead of me to buy a nice XR later on.
If insurance isn't a bother, I'd personally say go for the newest V8 Falcon you can get. In my personal opinion (don't take it too hard XR6 folks) a V8 GLi EL is a better buy then an EF XR6. Or a V8 AU Forte.
sell the XF....get another cheap run about to get you from A to B .....and save for the car you really want......now that you have 16k, it'll be easy build on that

Get something economical - fuel will probably be $1.30 by the end of the year, and there will be another shift in popularity to small and medium sized cars. You can get some pretty nice non ford cars in that price range. Pulsar GTiR anyone ? Scooby RS, Skyline etc.
I wouldn't call Skyline's or turbo SR20 cars economical. In fact, they use fuel in comparable amounts with Falcons - that's not cool.
You want economy, buy a VW Golf diesel. 1000km+ to the tank should be great. You want fun, buy a V8 Falcon. That's just my thoughts though, others may differ.
