What to do in Cairns?

Im heading to cairns in 4.5 weeks and was wondering if anybody who has been there could tell any good places to see and do while I'm up there. Also if what restaurants you may recommend. Im an avid seafood lover so those restaurants arent out of the question either.

Any info about the place would be gretly appreciated.

PS Im heading to Pt Douglas after so if you have anything good to say about that place, let me know.

Re: What to do in Cairns?

Sweat!

the old train up the mountain is kinda cool for a little day trip, There is a tourist village up the top and the train weaves up the mountains through the waterfalls. You can also take the sky cars up for a good overhead view.
Go to Cold rock Ice creamery on the main strip. The make the best custom ice-creams. You may have seen them before but they dont have them in Melbourne.

Re: What to do in Cairns?

thanx dcflick - yeah I have booked to do a few tours while Im in Pt Douglas. Im gonna do the Kuranda train tour which includes the cable skyrail among other things in that tour. Another tour im doing is the Low Isle sail away which I think includes snorkelling and other things and the last tour Im doing is a Cape Tribulation discovery safari for a day. So I do have a few things already organised. Is there anything else ppl can recommend me doing?

PS oh as far as ice-cream is concerned, I will definitely plant to visit there!

What to do, what to do.......

Well, I am going up there for xmas, and what I do is check out the Backpacker pubs, and then...well, I think you can guess what I try to do.

Cairns is a great place, but for me it is to bloody humid.

I can put up with the humidity. I'll prolly end up at the bar next to the pool as soon as I get there!

Re: What to do in Cairns?

Go for a drive up through the Atherton Tablelands to Lake Eacham (I think that's what it's called) great driving through there.

Re: What to do in Cairns?

Um, here's a start:

http://www.onthewallaby.com/packages.html

When I was up there we had a hire car, but I did also notice that all the major bus companies also run tour packages into the Atherton Tablelands.

Re: What to do in Cairns?

Also there's like 4WD safari tours to Cape Tribulation and Cooktown.

Yes, checking out the night markets is a must, and as Bluedriver said, yeah watch out for the ferals!
