What would you do in this situation?

Hi people,
I am just wondering about ppls experiences when they buy secondhand stuff like from the trading post etc. Last week I bought a nine inch centre with a 3.5:1 ratio. It was advertised in VGC and the guy wanted 450 dollars. I gave him a call and went out and looked at it. Well its a difficult thing to really check without stripping down. I checked it as much as possible and chatted to the guy for about an hour and a half. Well I got him down to 400 and a carton. Well on the weekend I decided I should strip it down and see what condition it was in. Its totally knackered in the the hemisphere and plenetary gears are a throw away! Now I'm wondering what I should do. Should I call the guy and see what he says or just put it down to experience? I was supposed to drop off the carton so now hes going to think im a bastard for not doing that. Has anyone else been in this situation and how did you handle it? I dont want to call him and turn it in to a slanging match. I think its something he got off a mate , so he may not have been aware how buggered it was.
Thanks Corey

Re: What would you do in this situation?

If it was advertised VGC, call him and tell him it wasn't and inform him you're drowning your sorrows with HIS carton of beer.
There's no way you can prove if was stuffed before you got it even though the things that were wrong with it are long term wear problems.
Enjoy the beer dude. (but call him and let him know, there's a 1 in a billion chance he might feel bad and give you some of your money back, but i doubt it)

Congratulations. You are still alive. Most people are so ungrateful to be alive, but not you. Not anymore.

Re: What would you do in this situation?

call the seller and tell him/her that what you bought was not what was described, and ask for a refund, if he wont come to the party and help you out tell him that the trading post has a legal side for fraud and that u have no option but to forward all the information on to them and he will be taken to court for damages.
i have some centers that i can give you 100% money back , i know the condition of them because i have had them rebuilt.
my centers are double the money u paid but a fraction of the stress and running around that ur about to do. u get what u pay for .....

why ring him up? get in your car and go see him. take the centre with you so you can show him. dont be huffy about it, just go see him and explain it how it is. ringing someone is the last thing you want to do coz they dont have to deal with you face to face, so its alot easier for him to say 'get stuffed'.
im sure if your civil towards him he will be understanding about. explain to him that there is no way you could have damaged it as the wear is long term wear.

difficult situation - if your confident enough then go and see him and ask for the money back - but I dont think he has any legal obligation to give you the money back, it is generally "buyer beware", i private sale dosnt include warranty, refunds or exchanges.
