When the Regs Are a Little Bit 'Stretched' In the Interests of Revenue

AP spied a speed camera op running yesterday in Sydney.

In the above photo you can see the vehicle is situated on the footpath next to a busy road. It is conveniently hidden behind as much roadside furniture as possible and unfortunately for accuracy reasons is surrounded by copious amounts of roadside furniture. It also forced one pedestrian with a wide pram to momentarily go around on the road as they couldn't fit between the car and the wall.

The NSW regs state that speed camera sites must be signposted and in the case of mobile cameras they use a small sign at ground level. In this case you will see the operator conveniently hides the sign further down the road where it can be barely seen due to roadside furniture and it is in shade on a very sunny day, and he has added the additional hidey tactic of facing the sign away from the traffic.

The operator quickly packed up and left after seeing me take the pics. I notice his coffee was finished though so maybe that was coincidence?

Isn't it also written in the regs that the camera vehicle shall not park where it cuases a hazard? Or impede traffic, be it vehicular or pedestrian? I would lodge a complaint about that.

Did you also notice how pointless these cameras are?

There's a guy riding a bike on the footpath with no helmet yet he doesn't even get a second look.

It's Policing with a cardboard telescope. You only see what you're focussed on but the world could be falling down around your ears! I can see it now - Carl Scully and the cronies playing 'I Spy' and throwing Lego around the caucus room!

Gee at least you get some warning by a sign indicating a speed camera ahead,in Victoria you don't,just revenue raisers the sooner the Brack's Labour Government gets kicked out the better.

All Sydneyites should write in and lodge a complaint. At the very least you will keep someone busy replying to all the letters.
Those signs are written on both sides, but hiding it behind a power pole is against the spirit, if not the rules.

This sort of poor behaviour of those trusted with upholding the should not go unrecognised!

There a bloke down here in Vic, that has been some of the ACA and TT shows. He gives expert testimony in speed camera and radar cases.
Dr Wolfgang Garwoli would have the coppers for lunch!

AP's pic from the rear, highlights a number of problems, tall buildings, power lines, how the vehicle is parked in relation to the curb.

Nice shots AP

Good work Agent AP. Methinks we should start up a documented database of such images and situations. I take my digital camera everywhere with me but have yet to spot a trap! The moment I do though....

So you lot out there with digitals, keep them handy and follow AP's lead! The more examples we have of this kind of behaviour, the more weight behind an argument we will have!

Re: When the Regs Are a Little Bit 'Stretched' In the Interests of Revenue

Hmm - How rude of those people.

I think there is an unspoken of, annoying, yet tolerated means for the South Australian government to raise money.

Our roadside speed cameras, unlike those in NSW (from Aussie Pete's pic) and those in QLD, are "undercover". In otherwords, the cars are inconspicuous, and just park on the side of the road. They do not have excessive antennas, nor do they carry South Australian State Government number plates, NOOO these cars are your everyday Holden Commodores, Ford Falcons and Mitsubishi Magnas with a small rectangular black box on the front bumper with a spot light attached.

Although, they do stick out like the preverbial in alot of cases because they are always in teh cheapest, nastiest colours (Ice Mint for example), they never carry any writing or anything. So at least the people in the other states can tell when they see a marked Police car on the side of the road, where SA residents constantly drive looking out for these new cars parked in odd places...
