Who still uses LRP??

how many of us are still using LRP?? and what sort of things have you done to cope!

ive got a XE falcon, and theres about 2 petrol staions in town that sell LRP.
and im just waiting for the day when they have the dreaded "out of order" sign up that most other stations do.
i need to know what the best thing for me to do regarding the phasing out of LRP.
i think using the additive would be a hassle, so should i modify the valves?
& how much would that cost??

the end is near.!

Re: Who still uses LRP??

Never used it (not talking about the XH - der) I use 98 octane & additive.

Yep XF unleaded head would do the trick, & would be the cheapest way. Not strictly comparable with a reco head (unless the XF head was too) but it depends what you want to achieve (& for how long).

Re: Who still uses LRP??

well at the moment i just want to be able to drive my car! i dont plan on having the car for more than a year, as i want to upgrade (or atleast change )

i can get the parts from an XF pretty easy, so i think ill look into that.
would i only need the heads or would i need the fuel system aswell?

any idea on the cost of getting the valves done, and can this be done at home? (how hard is it?)

Re: Who still uses LRP??

I don't use LRP, never have used LRP, wouldn't use LRP to start a fire..........
Fortunately my local servo mixes an additive called Flashlube with their premium unleaded, so I've always used that.
In the event that I can't get it, then I just mix it by hand.
You can buy it in bottles in most places.

LRP does nothing but destroy your engine / valves anyway.
Yet another marketing scam by our oil companies to pass off substandard fuel.
Pull the plugs out of the XE and have a squizz. You won't like what you see.........

Ed :)

Re: Who still uses LRP??

Valve seat recession (which is the problem caused by lack of lead) is worse at higher load and particularly higher rpm. So if you drive the XE gently (if it's auto it probably doesn't see over 2500rpm unless you really put your foot down) it's a good chance to last out the year as is, however if you can throw an XF head (complete) on cheaply do that. If the existing manifolds fit ok, use them - work on the KISS theory. At a very rough guess you would be looking at a few hundred dollars (2-400?) to convert your existing head.

Re: Who still uses LRP??

I wouldn't do a thing and just use unleaded.

Our family has had XA's through XF's all pre-unleaded and haven't had one problem. Although the 3.3L '84 XF doesn't like ULP, it pings when pushed really hard. Still, it's going strong after 12 years of ULP usage.

You could try a couple of tanks of ULP. If it pre-ignites you will have to modify/update the head. IIRC XE and XF are Alloy Head II and should swap over from a post '86 XF easy enough.

Re: Who still uses LRP??

ok thanks guys, i think ill hit dad up for that extra XF donk hes got lying around.

ive got a aftermarket intake manifold on the XE at the moment, & assuming this fits properly, it would be ok to use with the XF head?????
and whats this KISS theory!!
