Used to be a requirement that cars couldn't race as production cars unless at least ?500 built and, I think, sold in what was the equivalent to the current V8 series. Produced some great road cars by the major manufacturers, but was killed off by the press and pollies getting their nuts twisted over supercars on the roads. GTHO, Monaro, Torana (especially A9X), Charger all came from that, and every one a classic to some extent now because of it.
I've pretty much lost interest in touring cars. The Appendix J or Group N (historic) or whatever they are now is more interesting in some respects, as are the HQ's and the occasional series where they pull Lasers or whatever out of showrooms and run them.
Leaving aside the political issues and the manufacturer's undoubted desire to avoid a re-run of the supercar problem, would you rather see suitably modified (e.g. roll bars and safety stuff) production cars racing and be able to buy one, or stick with the current tourers that have about as much relationship to what you can buy as an F1?
I think for the "supercar scare" sake we are better off with the series we have.
Be nice if we could see procar get serious about production racing instead of nobbling cars all the time.
I would love to see real production racing return.
Race what ya drive I say.
The V8 supercar series is awesome dont get me wrong, but it lacks common ground for the people watching.

Just tweak the current rules I reckon
Bring them back closer to production spec
ie no wings, smaller brakes and lower rev limit ect..
The problem with production car rules is one car tends to dominate the series and we all know how boring that can be.
Sure you can then noble that car but its not very fair on the manufacturer who has basically done a better job than the rest

Thats what it should be about though...let the manufacturer that is building the better car win...dont give any chances to the other manufacturer, let them build a better car.
we would all win then. instead of trying to build a car just so that sells more, it needs to be built to win.

Good point, improves the breed
But I think the competion in the showrooms does this anyway
Motor racing is entertainment these days and it`s not very entertaining to see one car miles ahead of the rest
This is exactly why the V8 formula was introduced
i say make em look more original.. like a full interior.. factory body kits...
a la early 70's but still keep things like suspension and brakes . Wouldnt be 2 scared about a SuperCAR crisis now tho... We know have A.B.S, Airbags, better suspension, tyres AND TECHNOLOGY.
And finally no rev limiters.. LET THE 302 BREAK FREE :D

Absolutely right. As much as I enjoy the racing, it's hard to relate to since the cars are so far removed from the production versions. It's becoming far too much like Nascar for my liking.. what next - fibreglass "lookalike" body shells? Ugh!!
Bring back the factory racing I say!! It will still be tight, it will provide significant gains from manufacturer development (ala GT/GTHO!!!), and will still be a genuine test of driver and team competency.
