XK --> XL --> XM --> XP --> XT --> XR --> XW --> XY --> XA/B/C/D/E/F...

Why did ford start with XK?

and damn it what happened to the XN and XX falcons?

Well it was codenamed 19XK Thunderbird so I guess they went from there

Yep. It's the black sheep of the family which was subsequently driven out to the country & left to fend for itself.
