Win XP Service Pack 2

Last week i installed SP2 on my work laptop. Its been soon bloody slow ever since I installed it. Takes forever to boot up, and after logging in, i cant do a thing for a couple of minutes. My laptop is pretty well spec'd, as when it was brand new, it bloody hauled, as soon as i logged in it was ready to go...

Time for a format i think!!!

Also I installed an update for Mydoom, Lindoes and some other worm and once it installs, it comes up again to say that it needs to be installed again. My brother has the same problem.

Has anyone else had the same problems that i have with Win XP SP2 and that other update???

Re: Win XP Service Pack 2

Service pack 2 will be prove to be a pain in the arse... microsoft have reconfingured its built in firewall and now it stops many multiplayer games from working.

Those into multi player games, reconsider before installing XP SP2. atleast until they release info on ulternate firewall settings and game houses release patches.

Re: Win XP Service Pack 2

Our IT have told us not to install till testing has to be done, it doesnt seem to be a very good release of SP, not that much from microsoft ever seems to be.

You can disable the firewall by following these steps;

click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Windows Firewall.

On the General tab you can turn it on or off. Making it easier to play multiplayer games.

Also, the start lag on my PC has jumped considerably since installing SP2.

Re: Win XP Service Pack 2

i wouldn't recommend turning off the firewall... XP and 2000 OS' have been targeted for a while now, we have been, and are still in some of the most active attacks (virus storms we cal them) seen in a very long time.

We were getting roughly 60,000 attacks a week on our firewall...

Re: Win XP Service Pack 2

Most people using a firewall wouldn't use the WinXP one anyway. I myself have a software firewall on my server, therefore I don't need one on my main PC. I'm definitely gonna sit out SP2 and wait till it all settles

Re: Win XP Service Pack 2

We run Service Pack 2 Beta on some of the XP machines at work, and they're fine. SP2 increases XP's resource hunger though, crap machines (anything with less then an XP2400 and 768MB RAM and 7200rpm ATA133 drive IMO) beware. It also makes the XP install take 4GB of HDD space alone!

That being said, we run it on a HP-Compaq nc6000 laptop which is a Pentium M 1.6GHz, 768MB DDR DRAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD. Runs fine.

Re: Win XP Service Pack 2

id hardly call anything less than that a crap machine, but each to its own i guess, id replace the 768 with 512 and set that as a standard maybe
